The Edmonton Oilers will honour the military on Tuesday throughout their home game against the Utah Mammoth. The National Hockey League team’s annual Canadian Armed Forces Appreciation Game will see downtown Edmonton’s Rogers Place take on a military theme, including a special puck drop, a flag party with commanding officers, an intermission shootout featuring the children of veterans and tributes to military members throughout the game. The Oilers’ 50/50 game lottery will support the 4 Wing Military Family Resource Centre Society in Cold Lake. “The brave members of the Canadian Armed Forces play a critical role both at home and abroad in safeguarding our citizens and our nation’s sovereignty,” Tim Shipton, executive vice president of communications/gaming for OEG Sports & Entertainment, said Monday morning in a media release. “In recognition of their courage and sacrifice, we are proud to honour the true Heroes of Oil Country.” The day before the game, soldiers will participate in a skills-and-drills session with Oilers alumni followed by a shinny game as part of the armed forces’ Soldier On effort, which supports the recovery of ill and injured members and veterans through opportunities and resources via sports, recreational and creative activities. Tuesday’s game will also see the Oilers wear their new alternate uniform for the first time this season.
