Lightning strike starts fire in south Edmonton apartment

A lightning strike during a storm on Sunday afternoon caused a small fire in an apartment in the Rutherford area, say Edmonton Fire Rescue Services.

Around 2:30 p.m., Edmonton fire received calls about a fire in an apartment on Rutherford Road SW and 16 Avenue SW.

They arrived on scene six minutes later to find smoke coming from the roof of the building and a small fire.

The fire was under control by 3:18 p.m. and officially out just after 6 p.m., according to a statement to CTV News Edmonton.

There were no reported injuries.

EFRS said the fire was the result of a lightning strike.
