Large load will leave Edmonton on Saturday night and travel 3 nights to Strathcona County

The province is warning drivers of a large, slow-moving load that will leave Edmonton on Saturday on route to Strathcona County.

Because of its size, the EO reactor, used in the oil refining process, can’t travel faster than 30 km/h and will use the entire width of the highway, including the shoulder.

Officials say the load will sometimes travel against the flow of traffic with lanes blocked off accordingly.

The EO reactor is 9.8 metres wide, 9.3 metres high and 141 metres long and weighs 1,600,000 kilograms.

There are 832 wheels on the trailers being used to transport the equipment.

The equipment will leave Dacro Industries Inc. in south Edmonton on Saturday night and travel for three nights to reach the Shell Scotford Complex.

The route is as follows:

Day 1 Jan. 25 (Night Move)

• exit from 9325 51 Ave., Edmonton
• 51 Avenue eastbound
• 75 Street southbound
• Whitemud Drive eastbound counterflow
• Highway 216 southbound counterflow (stage at Highway 216 Bypass)

Day 2 Jan. 26 (Night Move)

• Highway 216 southbound counterflow
• Highway 14 eastbound
• Highway 834 northbound closure
• Highway 15 westbound closure (park at Highway 15 wide spot by Lamont)

Day 3 Jan 27 (Day Move)

• Highway 15 westbound
• Highway 15 westbound counterflow for 1.4 km
• Range Road 14 North
• exit west into site (Shell Scotford Complex)
