Cleanups were still underway on Highways 15 and 16 Saturday afternoon after freezing rain through central and northern Alberta led to multiple collision reports and at least one firetruck rollover. Lamont County officials confirmed a firetruck belonging to the county was involved in a rollover on Highway 15 between RR 201 and 202. The firefighters appeared to be uninjured. Freezing rain began in that area around 8:30 p.m. last night, officials said. “All indications are that ice was two inches thick on most roads within 20 to 30 minutes, and this significantly impacted road conditions,” the county told CTV News Edmonton on Saturday. Emergency crews and RCMP responded to “numerous” incidents on Highway 15 and Highway 16 on Friday night, it added, and motorists were advised to limit travel as scenes were still being cleared Saturday. On Friday night, Alberta RCMP sent out a brief media release to indicate detachments across central and northern Alberta had been responding to “dozens” of reports of collisions due to freezing rain.
