Fans around the world show Oilers support

Oilers fans across the world are watching the playoffs, with some having to go out of their way to do so, as Edmonton is down a game in Round 3 against Dallas.

As Edmonton swells with pride watching the Oilers try to reach the Stanley Cup final, people from around the world are also tuning in.

Oilers fans are well-represented internationally, with many of them going out of their way to watch their favourite team play.

Even on vacation, Jake Walters of Leduc never misses an opportunity to show off his love for his hockey team.

He posted a video on social media of him sneaking his way to a bar in Mexico to catch an Oilers playoff game.

“I got a few looks walking around in a sweater in 35 C (weather), but I take an Oilers jersey every time I travel,” Walters told CTV News Edmonton on Thursday from Puerto Aventuras.

Even on his honeymoon, the Oilers and the City of Edmonton got some love.

“I had a bunch of people ask where Edmonton is, (asking) what is the city like?” he said. “I’m always proud to talk about it.”

Oilers fandom knows no boundaries or time zones.

Russ Jericho, who was born in and lives in the United Kingdom, watches each Oilers game live even though he lives thousands of kilometres away from the action.

“If it starts at 7 p.m. MT, it’s usually 2 a.m. here,” he said from the seaside English town of Blackpool.

He has seen all 105 games the Oilers have played so far this season.

He’s earned an online following among fellow fans of the blue-and-orange, posting videos after games.

Jericho has visited Edmonton three times to watch the Oilers live, including a jaunt down Highway 2 to Calgary to see them play the rival Flames at the Saddledome.

“I got to see a road game and a Battle of Alberta all at the same time,” he said. “It was like bucket list items that were just waiting to be fulfilled.”

And the list of Oilers fans showing their support around the world goes on, including:

• one fan who flew in from the U.K. solo to watch the Oilers play twice;

• another from Germany who wanted to see fellow countryman Leon Draisaitl play in person;

• this family from Pennsylvania, who chose the Oilers to support even though their state is home to two other NHL teams;

• This man from Nebraska, who’s travelled to watch the Oilers play;

• And this man from Philadelphia, who isn’t afraid to display his love for the Oilers in Flyers country.
