Spruce Grove’s Energy City Cactus Rats have yet to play in the new Energy City Metro Ballpark, despite announcing that the team’s home opener would be played there without fans over the weekend. The team said on Saturday that the weekend games against the Brooks Bombers had been postponed due to rain. On Wednesday the team posted that the game scheduled for the same day against the Sylvan Lake Gulls was postponed “due to facility approvals.” The team has said multiple times in the last week that the ballpark would be ready to welcome fans this season, but has not given a date. “We appreciate the support from the fans, and look forward to having games at Metro Ballpark as soon as possible,” Wednesday’s post said. The ballpark has been under construction for the last three years. The Cactus Rats played the first six weeks of last season on the road and used Fort McMurray’s ballpark as their home venue for games in late June. They eventually used Spruce Grove’s Henry Singer Ball Park, a baseball complex with limited bleacher seating, for some home dates. With files from CTV News Edmonton’s Craig Ellingson
