Edmontonian makes Team Canada for 2026 Paralympic Winter Games

An athlete from Edmonton will be one of 17 on Canada's Paralympic hockey team at the upcoming winter games.

An athlete from Edmonton has made it on to Team Canada’s Paralympic hockey roster for the upcoming winter games.

Micah Kovacevich has played Para ice hockey on Canada’s national team since 2018, but will make his Paralympic debut for the first time this year at 28 years old.

He said while he knows it’s the biggest stage he’ll play on yet, he’s looking to ground himself as he navigates the “overwhelming” honour.

“It was really special. I put a lot of work in the last four years and basically my whole career playing built up to this moment here,” he told CTV News Edmonton on Tuesday.

“It was a lot to take in and obviously really really special.”

He will be one of 17 hockey players at the Paralympics in March sporting the maple leaf and one of two from Alberta. Auren Halbert, from Calgary, is also set to play.

The 2026 Paralympic Team Canada roster includes four other first-time Paralympians and 10 who won silver in 1011.

Canada will first play Slovakia in Italy on March 7.
