Edmonton weather: The January thaw sticks around all week

Cory Edel's forecast is showing a warm week ahead!

Our annual January thaw kicked off over the weekend with daytime highs of 6 C both Saturday and Sunday. That’s well above the seasonal average, but a few degrees short of the record highs for both those days.

We’ll stay within a few degrees of record highs today-Wednesday in Edmonton and should top out in the 4 to 8 C range through the next three or four days.

Looking longer-range: Daytime highs will likely get above the freezing mark every day until early next week.

That’d put us at eight to 10 above-0 C days with two weeks left in the month.

Edmonton has averaged 14 above-0 C days over the past five years.

Here’s a rundown of the number of days above zero in January.

• 2025: 18
• 2024: 8
• 2023: 9
• 2022: 17
• 2021: 17

So...the five-year average is 14 days.

Looking back further, the 30-year average is 10 days with temperatures above 0 C in January.

In other words: warm-ups like this are the norm in January, not the exception.

We’re not completely done with the cold, though. Below-average temperatures are likely to return towards the end of next week.

Elsewhere around the province, we have freezing rain warnings across the extreme north and snowfall warnings for the Icefields Parkway. Around 20 cm of snow could fall on parts of Highway 93 today and tonight.

There’s also a wind warning for the southwest corner of Alberta today with gusts over 100km/h.

We’re not expecting any precipitation in the Edmonton region over the coming days, but it will get a bit windy in the area this afternoon and again Wednesday night into Thursday.

Aside from that, the continued snowmelt and the freeze/thaw cycle are the big weather stories through the rest of the week.
