Cloudy, chilly and light snow today... But it won’t last long

There’s a BIG warm up coming for the weekend and next week as some above-average temperatures settle in.

But, we need to get through a few chilly days first.

The Edmonton region saw 1-2 cm of snow overnight and although we’re in a bit of a break in the precipitation this morning, it’s very likely that we’ll see another 1-3 cm of snow through this afternoon.

We’re expected some light snow to push back into the area late this morning and that precipitation could stick around through at least the early evening hours.

But, we’re definitely getting off with a lot less snow than other parts of Alberta will received or have already been hit with.

Highways are covered in snow and ice to the east, northeast and north of the Edmonton region this morning. I’m getting reports of around 10 cm of fresh snow on the ground in the Bonnyville/St. Paul area, with another 5-10 cm possible through today.

Not much snow on the ground south of the city, but some thick fog has prompted an advisory for areas just south and southeast of Edmonton.

The Hinton/Grande Cache region continues to be under a snowfall warning with heavier snow continuing into this afternoon.

And THEN... there are snowfall warnings for areas from Red Deer south to Lethbridge, through the southern mountain parks and east to the Saskatchewan border.

A new low-pressure system developing over the Calgary area will bring 10-25 cm of snow to areas within that warning zone starting late today and continuing through Thursday.

For the Edmonton region, we’ll stay mostly cloudy and cool Thursday. Temperatures will be in the -5 to -10 C range in the morning and around the freezing mark in the afternoon.

Friday morning’s going to be well below zero as well.

But, we’ll get back to the 5 to 10 C range Friday afternoon in the city.

Saturday should get to the 10 to 15 C range for a high.

AND...Sunday-Tuesday will hit the mid to upper teens and possibly even 20 C.

So...some Spring warmth is coming, we just need to get through a bit more spring snow and a brief cooldown first.
