Changes are coming to a three-block stretch of a downtown street starting next week in the name of transit priority and safety. The City of Edmonton said in a media release on Friday that crews will begin work on 101 Street between Jasper Avenue and 102A Avenue on Monday to establish a bus-only curb lane southbound on 101 Street and to remove one northbound lane to create two wider lanes. The city says it expects the work to take one week. The southbound bus lane will be in effect weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with right turns at intersections still permitted. The removal of one northbound lane is in the interest of safety and efficiency, the city says, adding the change will “reduce the need for buses to move between lanes and allow vehicles to safely pass buses when necessary.” Other changes include the removal of on-street parking and loading zones in either direction on weekdays between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., traffic signal changes, new pavement markings and signage, and pavement. The city says most of the work will be done overnight, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.
