One-hundred men donated a total of $10,000 to a local charity ahead of the holidays. T8N 100 Men is a group in St. Albert that gets together four times a year to vote for one of three charities to receive $10,000. “We’re not going to cure cancer with our group, our $10,000 would be a drop in the bucket,” said John Liston. “But we are going to help a small charity that, without our $10,000, might not survive.” The charitable social club has been running since 2016 and has had 35 meetings. “Smaller charities spend an inordinate amount of time chasing money, and what we really want them doing is service who they serve,” said Liston. This year’s charities were Sport Central, AdaptAbilities and Neutral Ground. Kathryn McCaffrey with Sport Central, a charity that provides sporting equipment to kids, was hoping to take the most votes Friday evening to help them relocate in the new year. “It would be really nice to increase the operational capacity and efficiency of our bike shop,” said McCaffrey. But it was Neutral Ground that ended up winning over donors. Neutral Ground works to combat isolation and create community in St. Albert. “I wasn’t expecting to win,” said Neutral Ground president Richard Miller. “It was just amazing to speak to people who want to help the community, who want to do something good.” The $10,000-donation will go toward partnering with other organizations, meet people who are isolated and bring community to them, said Miller.
