TORONTO - People who qualify for compensation due to the listeriosis outbreak traced back to Maple Leaf Foods Inc. (TSX:MFI) now have 181 days to file a claim.

A settlement of up to $27 million has been approved to provide compensation to people who bought or ate recalled Maple Leaf meat products between Jan. 1, 2008 and Aug. 31, 2008.

The settlement provides varying amounts of compensation, from $750 to $125,000, depending on the severity of the illness.

More than 5,200 claimants across Canada are believed to be in a position to make financial claims, which must be filed by 5 p.m ET, Nov. 2, 2009.

Twenty-two people across Canada died last summer after eating Maple Leaf deli meats contaminated with Listeria, triggering the largest meat recall in Canadian history.

Those who qualify for compensation can download a claim form from the web site www.mapleleafclaim.com or by calling a court-appointed claims administrator toll-free at 1-800-801-2521.
