MONTREAL - The Public Health Agency of Canada says a Quebec man died of listeriosis in January.

The agency says the Quebec Health Department reported the man became ill in November but it is impossible to determine what caused the infection.

However, the federal agency says the case will be included in the tally for last year's listeriosis outbreak because the strain matches the 2008 outbreak strain.

It added that the timing of the illness falls within the incubation timeline of the outbreak, which was linked to tainted meat produced by Maple Leaf Foods.

There were a total of 57 confirmed cases of listeriosis in the 2008 outbreak and 21 where the infection was the underlying or contributing cause of death.

There are between 100 and 140 cases of listeriosis reported in Canada each year. Healthy people who are exposed to the bacteria are rarely affected but there are higher risks for infants, the elderly, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.
