Oct. 20, 2014 – Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent is run down and killed by a radicalized Quebec man in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, located approximately 50 kilometres southeast of Montreal.

Police say the driver, Martin Couture-Rouleau, had been on the RCMP's radar. Officers had visited Couture-Rouleau as recently as Oct. 9 in their ongoing attempts to de-radicalize him, but police did not have enough evidence to charge him with any crime.

Oct. 22, 2014, 9:52 a.m. – Ottawa police receive reports of an honour guard shot at National War Memorial near Parliament Hill. Cpl. Nathan Cirillo is shot in the back while standing ceremonial guard at the memorial.

Shortly before 10 a.m. – Gunshots are first reported in Parliament's Centre Block. Members of Parliament tweet that they're being told to lock themselves in offices.

10:21 a.m. – MP Bob Zimmer tweets that a "lone gunman" is deceased. The suspect is later identified as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a Canadian citizen born in 1982.

2:10 p.m. – Ottawa police and RCMP hold a press conference, officially confirming the deaths of both Cirillo and Zehaf-Bibeau.

8:08 p.m. – In a televised address to the nation, Prime Minister Stephen Harper saysthe two "despicable attacks" on Canadian soldiers will not weaken the country's resolve to fight terrorism at home and abroad.

Oct. 23 – MPs return to the House of Commons where Harper says changes could be coming to laws that govern how Canada's national security agencies track suspected extremists.

Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin is credited for his role in stopping the shooter inside Parliament’s Centre Block. Vickers receives a standing ovation in the House of Commons. In a statement, he says he is "grateful and proud" to be part of the security team that took down the shooter.

Oct. 24 – Hundreds gather at the National War Memorial to witness the return of the ceremonial honour guard.

Oct. 25 – The grounds of Parliament Hill reopen to the public with a heightened RCMP presence.

Oct. 27 – Mourners line-up to pay their respects to Cirillo during a public visitation in his hometown of Hamilton, Ont.

RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson tells the Senate national security and defence committee that Canadian laws should make it easier for security agencies to track suspected extremists by "lowering the threshold" for certain enforcement tools.

Oct. 28 – Cirillo is laid to rest. During a funeral service attended by the prime minister, Harper says Cirillo died "protecting and preserving."

Nov. 1 – Vincent is laid to rest in Longueil, Que. Harper says in a speech to Vincent's family that "all of Canada shares your pain."

Nov. 10 – The Department of National Defence announces that Canadian Armed Forces operating bases in Iraq and Kuwait will be named after Vincent and Cirillo.

Jan. 30 –TheConservative government tables Bill C-51. The Act amends the Criminal Code, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Act, the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and other bills in an attempt to crack down on homegrown extremists.

March 6 – RCMP release a video made by Zefah-Bibeau moments before he stormed Parliament Hill. In the video, he says he's "aiming to hit some soldiers just to show that you’re not even safe in your own land, you gotta be careful."

March 13 – Defence Minister Jason Kenney says Cirillo's death triggered a move to expand benefits for Canadian reservists.

April 2 – An independent report into the storming of Parliament Hill concludes that security forces were justified in using lethal force against Zehaf-Bibeau.

May 22 – CTV learns of serious mistakes made by RCMP officers following Cirillo's shooting, which included one case of a Mountie who fled Parliament Hill during the shooting, and another officer who was texting on his phone and didn’t notice as Zehaf-Bibeau drove by in a car he had hijacked.

May 29 – RCMP release the full version of the video Zehaf-Bibeau shot before storming Parliament Hill. The Mounties had held part of the footage, claiming it was central to their investigation. 

June 3 – In an OPP report it's revealed that an RCMP officer's "garbled" radio transmission failed to alert her colleagues that "a guy with a gun" was headed for Centre Block.

Oct. 20 – Mourners mark the anniversary of Vincent's death during a ceremony in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, where he's remembered as someone who "was always ready to help" without asking anything in return.
