The Atlantic Lottery Corporation has started taking bets on the U.S. presidential race through the popular sports betting system Pro-Line.
Those interested in playing can place a wager on who they think will win the Republican nomination, the Democratic nomination, and who will ultimately take the White House in November.
This is the first time Atlantic Lottery has offered odds on a political race, but it's not the first time it's been done in Canada. Similar contests have been played in B.C.
Atlantic Lottery spokesperson Christine Manore said the corporation isn't expecting the presidential bets to be a major source of revenue.
"It's really an opportunity to diversify the product and just to get people looking at Pro-Line," she told CTV Atlantic, explaining that their’s matches a product already available on international websites.
But anti-gambling advocate Terry Fulmer, who is a member of the anti-gambling group Game Over VLTS, said it's still a problem.
"They're increasingly developing a footprint to have more control, to have more influence in that revenue stream," he said.
While the service is still fairly new, Atlantic Lottery says it expects bets to pick up as the U.S. election nears.
It also said it has no intention of taking bets on Canadian political races. As an arm’s length government agency, that would be a conflict of interest.
