Newfoundland and Labrador election called for Oct. 14

ST. JOHN’S -- Voters in Newfoundland and Labrador will be heading to the polls on Oct. 14.

Liberal Leader John Hogan visited the lieutenant-governor’s residence this afternoon to ask her to dissolve the legislature.

Hogan is seeking his first election win as premier after he won the Liberal leadership race in May.

He will face a tough battle against Progressive Conservative Leader Tony Wakeham.

Health care and provincial finances are expected to take top billing during the campaign, alongside a sweeping new energy deal with Quebec.

The Liberals hold 19 of the legislature’s 40 seats, the Tories have 14, and the New Democrats hold one seat. As well, there are two Independent members and four vacant seats.
