Police have charged a 36-year-old junior high school teacher in Nova Scotia with sexually assaulting a student.

In a statement released Friday, the RCMP said they were notified of an incident during which a teacher allegedly had “inappropriate contact” with a student.

Investigators have not released any information about the identity of the victim, but said the alleged assault took place at Five Bridges Junior High School in Hubley N.S., located approximately 25 kilometres west of Halifax.

In a statement to CTV Atlantic, a spokesperson from the Halifax Regional School Board said the employee in question has been put on leave, adding that the allegations are “deeply troubling.”

Sarah Allt Harnish, 36, was arrested on Friday. She has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference. None of the charges against her have been proven in court.

Harnish has been released on several conditions, including no contact with the victim and no contact with anyone under 16. She must also stay away from schools and other areas frequented by children.

She is set to appear in a Halifax court on May 3.
