The devastating Fort McMurray, Alta., wildfire that prompted a mass evacuation and destroyed large swaths of some neighbourhoods is now officially under control.

The fire was first discovered on May 1, and it eventually grew to nearly 590,000 hectares. The fire forced an emergency evacuation of Fort McMurray, with many residents making a harrowing drive out of the city as flames engulfed trees and homes around them.

In a provincial fire update issued Tuesday morning, one fire in the Fort McMurray area is still classified as “being held,” meaning that it’s not completely under control yet. But wildfire information officer Laura Stewart told CTVNews.ca that’s a more recent fire caused by lightning.

She said firefighters are “very happy” to have the massive Fort McMurray wildfire finally under control.

The provincial state of emergency declared over the wildfire nearly two months ago was finally lifted last week.
