Crews find wreckage believed to be of missing helicopter in Manitoba

The report said when the chopper went down, winds had shifted and moved smoke from nearby forest fires into the Gull Lake area.

GILLAM, Man. -- Searchers have found wreckage believed to be that of a missing helicopter in northern Manitoba.

The Bell 206 chopper left Gillam on Monday afternoon to pick up people in a remote area about 50 kilometres away.

But the aircraft, which departed from Gillam with only the pilot on board, didn't return later in the day as scheduled.

The RCMP says a crash site has been located about 50 kilometres west of Gillam at Gull Lake.

There is no word on whether any survivors have been spotted.

Police say efforts are underway to get to the location.

Gillam is about 1,100 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
