Economist David Macdonald warns the CRA’s 6,700 job cuts and more reductions ahead could overwhelm service levels, despite the recent 100-day improvements.

Some Canadians are complaining on social media about delays in getting their tax returns processed.

The Canada Revenue Agency said on its website that in most situations, tax returns should be processed “immediately.” The deadline to file taxes was April 30 for most taxpayers.

The notice of assessment (NOA) summarizes the numbers for your income tax and benefit return after you file your taxes, according to the CRA. If there are changes to your assessed tax return, the CRA will send a notice of reassessment (NOR).

It said both the NOA and NOR will be available in your online CRA account after your return is processed.

But some taxpayers expressed frustration over not yet receiving their notice of assessment and refunds.

“Still waiting for my refund and NOA. Filed since (March 23),” wrote one Facebook user on the CRA’s page.

The CRA told another frustrated individual on X that the processing times “can vary based on the individual situation.”

The federal tax agency recommends people with questions to call its agents, it added on X.

The CRA cited potential reasons why returns could be delayed, including errors, missing information, as well as the need for “specialized processing” and “more review.”
