About 20 businesses along Calgary’s Bowness Road were affected when a water main break led to a large crack on the north side of the thoroughfare. This all happened in the 6300 block, leading to a rude awakening Saturday morning when some business owners arrived at work. “We saw a giant sinkhole in the road that we have been told is caused by the recurring leak in the water main. I think this is the third water main break in this area in the last few weeks,” says Shauna Vowel, the owner of Awaken the Gems. “We arrived yesterday (Saturday) morning and realized that our basement had a few inches of water.” Many businesses along the road were forced to close or scale back operations. “We are the only business aside from the one across the street that’s allowed to be open right now, and on a weekend, that’s tough revenue to lose,” says Vowel. City crews were there working on the problem, and a water wagon was brought to the scene. Vowel said this is the third time businesses along Bowness Road have had to close or adjust operations because of water issues, and she’s only been in her location for four and a half months CTV News has contacted the City of Calgary and it is looking into getting more information on what happened and how long it might take to repair.
