The Sulphur Mountain Gondola was reopened to visitors on Thursday after it was closed for more than a year for renovations. The structure was built in 1959 and the summit facility has now been transformed with new restaurants, interpretive exhibits, a theatre and an observation deck. The renovation cost $26 million and officials say the state-of-the-art centre has something for everyone. “There's so much to do in this new facility from great dining to the interpretive floor, to our movie theatre, so all of these great attractions. People can spend literally an hour, two hours, in this building alone, let alone spending an hour of discovery on top of Sulphur Mountain on the boardwalk,” said Mark Hendrikse, Brewster Travel Canada. The newly renovated upper terminal is much bigger than the old facility but its environmental footprint is much smaller because of things like LED lighting, recycling, and solar power. “We’ve implemented technologies and processes to really reduce our ecological footprint so althought the square footage of this facility is significantly bigger than the former facility, our environmental impact is significantly reduced because of those technologies and processes,” said Hendrikse.
