Next month, Calgary audiences will be whisked away to an entirely different world of fantasy and science fiction by one of the world’s top video game composers. On March 28 at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, Eímear Noone will lead the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in Gamesymphonic, a performance that brings audiences through such iconic fantasy worlds such as The Legend of Zelda, Halo, The Last of Us, Fortnite, Fallout, Starcraft and World of Warcraft. Noone, who has composed some of the soundscapes enjoyed by fans of World of Warcraft as well as Diablo 3, Starcraft 2 and Overwatch, will be joined by guest vocalist Carly Smithson and the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus. “As video games have become a force in the world of arts and entertainment, millions of people have come to love the sound of orchestral scores through playing them,” the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra said in a Monday news release. “Indeed, many of the best scores are recognized as esteemed works in their own right, and Gamesymphonic provides a don’t-miss opportunity to hear them performed live with the full power of the Calgary Phil Orchestra.” Noone has appeared in concert with the San Francisco Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and Danish National Symphony Orchestra, among many others. She has also toured as a conductor with The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses, a full four-movement symphony created from the themes from the iconic video game. Tickets and further information can be found on the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s website.
