Lethbridge athletes will soon have a new place to train when the weather turns cold. The University of Lethbridge has announced plans to build a multi-sport dome on campus. The $13.5-million dome will be built next to Community Stadium. The 127,000-square-foot facility has taken plenty of planning to get over the finish line. “There is not a dome south of Calgary, and even Calgary has a dearth of domes—there’s not many that have been built there—so we think this is a true community changer for all members of our community,” said Neil Langevin, executive director of Pronghorns Athletics and Recreation. The dome will be able to support full-sized soccer or rugby games when finished. The field can also host football, field lacrosse, baseball and more. It will also feature two sport courts on either end of the field and a multi-lane track. “We have looked at making this multi-purpose, designed so we can play full-size soccer and rugby games in there,” said Langevin. The U of L students’ union is contributing $1.15 million to the project in a landmark investment. The union will serve as the dome’s title sponsor and will announce an official name for the facility in the coming months. The union believes this new space will have a positive impact on student health and well-being. “In terms of our priorities, it really aligns with, right now, the limited space we have on campus and scholarship endowments,” said ULSU president Alejandro Figuerosa. The dome will be a significant training upgrade for the U of L Pronghorns. The soccer and rugby teams will finally have a place to train year-round. “It’s just going to bring so many opportunities to not be freezing our toes off and just be able to actually compete and train and tackle and do all the things that rugby needs to move forward,” said first-year rugby player Shanelle Mann. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027 with a targeted completion of August of that year.
