UB40 founding member and guitarist Robin Campbell may never get to meet Neil Diamond, but they’ll forever be linked by Red Red Wine, written by Diamond. “He’s never thanked me for making it a number one hit in 30-odd countries,” Campbell told CTV News. “It’s one of the songs we must play and, I think, one of the songs we enjoy playing the most,” Campbell said from his home outside Birmingham, England. UB40 performs in the Calgary area October 14th at the Grey Eagle Event Centre. While the band is guaranteed to play Red Red Wine and their other hits, it will likely never top the socially conscious group performing in South Africa shortly after Nelson Mandela became president. Campbell called it possibly the best gig they’ve ever played. “To get invited there and celebrate the new South Africa was a very emotional thing and one of the things I’ll remember forever,” Campbell said.
