Suspect charged in random attack on Calgary transit platform

Calgary police say charges have been laid against a 28-year-old man in connection with a random attack at the Marlborough CTrain Station.

Liam James Rooney is charged with assaulting a man who was standing on the LRT platform on July 11.

Police say Rooney approached the victim from behind and attacked him.

The victim fell to the ground and briefly lost consciousness. The accused fled the scene shortly afterward.

“The victim and suspect had no prior interactions and are unknown to each other. The victim was transported to hospital in stable condition, where he was later released,” police said in a news release.

Rooney is expected to appear in court on Oct. 15.
