Katie Gaudreau-Joyce’s social media post earlier this week featured an image of her child covered in a Calgary Flames jersey. This NHL season is especially close to her family’s hearts, she wrote, as it will be the last for the Saddledome venue. “A rink filled with so many memories, where Uncle John became the superstar Johnny Hockey and where Calgary welcomed him, cheered for him and became such a special part of his story,” she wrote. “So this one is for the Dome, for Calgary and for all the memories of John that will always live under that iconic roof.” Brothers Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau died the night of Aug. 29, 2024, when struck by an SUV as they rode bicycles near their hometown in New Jersey on the eve of their sister’s wedding. Katie married Devin Joyce almost a year later, and they’ve since had a child—Matthew Guy Joyce—who was sporting the Flames jersey this week. Johnny played for the Flames from 2014 to 2022. He went on to play for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Matthew also played pro hockey, with runs in the AHL, ECHL and abroad in Sweden.
