Showers and thunderstorms possible in Calgary Wednesday, followed by sunshine

A mix of sun and cloud Wednesday with sun the rest of the week. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

A pair of low-pressure systems – one from northern British Columbia and one from northern Montana – will contribute to instability in and around Calgary on Wednesday.

These systems are expected to converge over the south-central regions of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and encounter the northern edge of a large ridge of high pressure south of the border.

Throughout the morning Wednesday, storm cells will initiate off of the Foothills before tracking north and east by the early afternoon.

There is a chance of thunderstorm development in Calgary, but if that does occur, these cells should be both scattered and short-lived.

The greatest potential storm threats for Calgary include strong wind, pockets of heavy rain and small to medium-sized hail.

Severe thunderstorms may form in east-central Alberta, as that region is closer to the warm and moist air mass cutting through the southeast corner of the province.

Starting Thursday, we can expect more sunshine with daytime highs in Calgary, hovering around 20 C.

By the end of the weekend a more stable pattern will emerge and drive temperatures up for the final week of August.
