A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for the City of Calgary area just before noon Sunday. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) posted the alert on its website at 11:47 a.m "Severe thunderstorms are likely to develop along the Foothills this afternoon and evening and will move (through) the southeast,“ it said. ”These thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging hail, heavy rain and strong wind gusts." It added that severe thunderstorms can sometimes produce tornadoes.
