A new high school in Raymond, Alta., has officially opened. Westwind School Division held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday morning. The new facility is more than 6,000 square metres and includes 17 teaching stations, a black box theatre, a band room, a wood shop, a weight room and a commercial kitchen. The school has a capacity of 550 students, with potential for a future buildout to accommodate more than 750 students. Planning for the $45-million project began in 2017, with construction complete earlier this summer. “We all had a vision of what this was going to look like and to get it here today and see the kids in the stands, to walk through, to have community sneaking in and looking in windows; that’s the one fun part,” said Darren Mazutinec, Westwind School Division superintendent. “The other fun part is the learning stations that we’ve got. The different genres of education that this building captures are really the pinnacle of this whole project.” A community open house for the new school was scheduled to run until 7:30 p.m.
