Calgary students will soon be able to learn more about the importance of civic responsibility, thanks to a new City of Calgary program. Officials announced the launch of Beyond the Badge on Thursday. The program will see Community Peace Officers head to Grade 9 classrooms across the city to teach them about citizenship, community safety and career opportunities. “The program helps students better understand the role Community Peace Officers play in supporting safe communities while encouraging students to consider how they can contribute positively to the city around them,” the city said in a news release. Beyond the Badge is free and combines curriculum-connected lessons with real-world learning experiences. “We want students to see that community safety is a shared responsibility and that everyone has a role to play in creating strong, vibrant neighbourhoods,” said Rajdeep Gill, community liaison officer with Community Standards. “Beyond the Badge provides hands-on learning experiences that encourage students to think critically, work together and explore future career possibilities.”
