The National Music Centre in Calgary is celebrating what would have been Oscar Peterson’s 100th birthday on Aug. 15, and leading the party is one of Peterson’s students—Juno Award-winning jazz pianist Andy Milne.

“I think he’s really the person responsible for kind of why I play,” Milne told CTV News.

Milne’s performance coincides with Timeless: 100 Years of Oscar Peterson, a new exhibit at the National Music Centre.

“He’s the most prominent voice in jazz, I think, that’s come from Canada, and as an art form that was born in the United States, it’s certainly a testament to the cultural legacy that he leaves in Canada and leaves internationally,” Milne said.
