Mount Royal University is giving its students the tools they need to thrive, as grocery prices rise. ‘Nourishu’ is a three-hour food education program that helps students learn to budget and meal plan. A hands-on cooking class is also included. Nourishu is in its fourth year. The university says a survey found 29 per cent of the student body is worried about food insecurity, prompting them to give students something more than just a degree in their field of study. They’re learning a life skill which is something that is going to support them beyond thriving academically thriving as individual humans contributing to the world," said MRU’s mental health promotion coordinator Ashley Barrett. “It’s impossible to reach those goals if you worry abut where your next meal is coming from or if you’re hungry.” Participants leave the course with a $100 grocery gift card, essential kitchen tools and printed resources.
