More showers, thunderstorms expected Thursday with snow possible in the Rockies overnight

Thursday will be similar to Wednesday in terms of weather conditions with a moderate northwest wind, more cloud than sun and scattered showers throughout the day.

The ingredients are in place for isolated thunderstorms to develop across central and southern Alberta by the afternoon, but most should remain non-severe in nature.

Any thunderstorms that do contain the energy to be considered severe should be on the low-end with the greatest risks being hail and damaging wind.

A slow-moving low-pressure system in the eastern Prairies has been holding this upper pattern in place and it will allow for one more wave of instability across the Rockies overnight.

Calgary will see more steady rain in the afternoon and evening on Thursday and potentially for the Friday morning commute.

Overnight temperatures could be cold enough in the higher elevations and along the foothills to cause rain to transition to snow.

The daytime highs will be warm enough any fresh snow should easily melt, especially on roadways.

Friday will be the coldest day of the week with a high of just 12 C in Calgary compared to the average high of 20 C.

The rest of the weekend and early next week will include more sunshine and highs at or above normal, peaking at 26 C on Monday and Tuesday.

More showers and thunderstorms are possible on Tuesday in Calgary and again at the end of next week.
