Investigation continues into a fatal collision that involved a vehicle, a cyclist and others Saturday afternoon in the northeast. At around 1:35 p.m., a collision took place in the northbound lanes of Centre Street North, between 19 Avenue N.E. and 21 Avenue N.E. Police say a man in his 70s was driving a black 2019 Ford Escape with a woman in her 60s in the passenger seat northbound in the curb lane when he experienced a medical episode, causing the vehicle to drift onto the curb and strike the cyclist, a man in his 60s driving in the same direction. Investigators believe the Escape went onto the sidewalk, hit a bus stop sign and kept going, dragging the cyclist before returning to the road close to 20 Ave. N.E. The vehicle then travelled into the intersection of 21 Ave. N.E. where it hit the rear passenger side of a stationary Toyota Highlander, pushing it into a Chevrolet Silverado that was stopped at the intersection. That caused the Escape to go back onto the sidewalk, where it struck a man in his 60s before it hit a stop sign and a second pole, causing it to stop. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Escape was transported to hospital in critical condition. The pedestrian received minor injuries. All other involved parties reported minor or no injuries. Police say there’s no evidence alcohol, drugs or excessive speed were factors, but are investigating whether a medical incident was.
