Legendary sportscaster and his wife found dead in Braeside home

Friends, family and co-workers of Bill and Donna Lee Powers are mourning the loss of the radio legend and his wife.

The CPS Homicide Unit continues its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the grisly discovery of two bodies inside the Braeside home of the Powers early Thursday morning.

Police have not confirmed the identities of the deceased, but those who knew the Powers say the couple were found dead inside their home.

At approximately 5:20 a.m., the emergency call centre received a 911 call alerting them of an incident at a home in the 1700 block of 110 Ave. S.W..

Officers attended the residence and found the bodies of the victims inside.

The area surrounding the home, including a section of park at the Braeside Community Centre, was taped off by police during the investigation.

Police recovered a knife from a location a few blocks away from the home, but there is no word if it is connected to the deaths.

Duty Inspector Mike Tillotson said on Thursday that they have a suspect, who was taken into custody without incident along Southland Dr., several blocks from the Powers home.

Tillotson says an area search, common in homicide investigations, led to the discovery of two other crime scenes related to the deaths.

"We will do an area search looking for evidence that might be associated to that incident. In this case, we're doing that, and we're also searching the area between where the suspect was found and the residence where the deceased people were found. And that's quite a large area."

He said there is a connection between the victims and the suspect and they are trying to figure out the exact details of the relationship.  Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the crime at this time.

Autopsies will be conducted on the victims within the next 24 hours.

A neighbour said the news of the deaths comes as a complete shock. "It's really scary, it takes me by surprise."

Another man said that he used to think that Braeside was a safe neighbourhood. "I'd say it was the neighbourhood were you never had to lock your doors; often we didn't. Our kids would go out, we'd just leave the doors unlocked and they'd come home. I guess it's changing today, isn't it?"
