‘Instilling a sense of pride’: Calgary Pathway and River Cleanup this weekend

Volunteers will be out all weekend in Calgary for the annual Pathway and River cleanup.

City officials are preparing to host Calgary’s annual Pathway and River Cleanup.

The event was first held back in 1967, when 12-year-old Sandra Crawford penned a letter to the Calgary Herald complaining about debris along the river, which sparked an annual cleanup.

The event sees hundreds of volunteers gather together to pick up litter along the 300 kilometres of river pathways at more than 170 locations.

“I always look forward to the yearly Pathway and River Cleanup with great enthusiasm,” said Kyle Ripley, director of parks and open spaces, in a Thursday news release. “It’s a vital reminder for all Calgarians of our shared responsibility to safeguard and maintain our parks, pathways, and green spaces.”

Ripley says the annual event helps unite the community, “instilling a sense of pride and motivating everyone to remain active in preserving the beauty and cleanliness of our city all year long.”

The 2025 Pathway and River Cleanup will be held Friday, May 2 to Sunday, May 4.
