Golf courses open for the season a little later than usual

The long winter wait is over as Calgary golf courses are finally opening up.

Play Golf Calgary were the first to open its fairways to the public, with Blue Devil, Heather Glen and Serenity all opening Friday.

It’s been a long off-season for golfers, but the courses appear to have wintered well and the first golfers of the season were just happy to be out chasing a ball around.

“First round of the year,” said golfer Darcy Murnaghan, at Blue Devil. “It’s Masters week so it gives you some motivation to get out and swing the club, but yeah, we’ll take this weather-- it’s better than shovelling snow, that’s for sure.”

“This is very late for us,” said Blake Clayton, Blue Devil’s director of golf.

“Typically, the last few years, we’ve opened in March, so everybody had to wait a few extra weeks -- but definitely (it’s) good to get open.

“Everything came through really well,” he added. “We pulled the tarps yesterday and were able to get on the greens and do some work and were able to roll and cut this morning as well -- so they are in as good of shape as you could imagine they would be for this time of year.”

Clayton said the phone has been ringing off the hook at all three courses. Because of the ever-changing weather, they may have a few days that they’re not open, but otherwise, it’s clear sailing.

The forecast for Sunday is for scattered snow flurries.
