Police have identified a man fatally stabbed in Calgary’s East Village late last week. They’ve also identified the man in custody and charged in connection. At 7 p.m. on Oct. 2, 31-year-old Lionel Fontem Essembieng was found in the 500 block of Seventh Avenue S.E. suffering from significant injuries. Essembieng was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition and later died. Newton Kioi Ng’ang’a, 28, was later arrested and has since been charged with second-degree murder. Police believe Ng’ang’a and Essembieng got into a fight and that Ng’ang’a ultimately stabbed Essembieng. Police believe Ng’ang’a and Essembieng were known to each other and had previous altercations. The accusation has not yet been tested in court. Ng’ang’a is next scheduled to appear before a judge on Oct. 14. Essembieng is Calgary’s 15th homicide of 2026. The police investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident on Oct. 2 is ongoing.
