Dozens possibly ill from stomach sickness at Saskatoon Farm restaurant: Alberta Health Services

Alberta Health Services says a restaurant at the Saskatoon Farm south of Calgary will remain closed until further notice.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has confirmed it is investigating whether two hospitalizations, as well as dozens of reports of a gastrointestinal illness, were caused by several issues at Saskatoon Farm, south of Calgary.

In a statement to CTV News on Thursday, AHS confirmed it is investigating 88 reports of gastrointestinal illness among visitors of the location east of Okotoks, Alta.

AHS says it ordered the restaurant closed on July 23, the same day the business said it voluntarily closed its doors after it admitted there was an issue with its water supply.

Health officials said it will stay closed until test results come back and Saskatoon Farm’s kitchen has a “thorough deep cleaning.”

“Further investigation is ongoing, including additional environmental inspections, outreach to affected individuals to gather detailed information about their symptoms and food history, and a comprehensive review of the drinking water system. At this time, no definitive cause has been confirmed,” AHS said.

In a statement on Wednesday, Saskatoon Farm said it is fully cooperating with the directives from AHS and the closure affects its restaurant, bakery and Red House.

“At this time, we do not have any information regarding when our food service facilities will be permitted to reopen. We will continue to keep our patrons informed as we receive further updates from AHS,” the business said.

As a result, the farm said its Fiesta Friday on July 25 is cancelled and there will be no food service at the Wellness Immersion Event on July 26.

Saskatoon Farm says it still has produce for sale, but all customers should wash them thoroughly at home before consuming them.

CTV News’ requests for an interview with Saskatoon Farm were not answered.
