City crews cleaning priority routes with deep freeze forecast through Tuesday

Calgarians are being urged to dress and drive to the conditions as the cold holds us in its grip until Tuesday. Tyler Barrow reports.

Calgary snow clearing crews were out on priority routes Sunday, following a minor snowfall compounded by the return of freezing cold temperatures.

A release sent out by the city Sunday said crews would be plowing and applying anti-icing materials to trouble spots such as hills, bridge decks and intersections.

City spokesperson Christopher McGeachy said drivers should approach roads with a certain mindset.

“We are in winter driving conditions,” McGeachy said. “Leave plenty of time to get to where you need to go, leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front, and just ensure that you know you’re prepared before you head out.”

Be prepared

EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux said if you’re heading out over the next few days, to be prepared.

“Make sure you bring extra layers of clothing with you, especially if you’re caught out in the elements,” Brideaux said. “With this wind chill, exposed skin can be subject to frostbite very, very quickly,”

Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting a high of -24 C through Tuesday, with lows dipping to -27 C at night.

Wednesday is supposed to warm up to -16 C.

Nakiska Ski Area announced on social media that it’s closing Monday due to cold.
