Cavalry FC remained atop the standings in the Canadian Premier League thanks to a 4-2 win over Pacific FC Saturday at ATCO Field. The win allowed Cavalry to keep pace with Forge FC, who defeated Atletico Ottawa FC 2-1 earlier Saturday. Both clubs have 57 points, with one game remaining in the regular season. In terms of tie breaks, Cavalry has a seven goal differential advantage. It didn’t start out so hot, however, as Pacific FC jumped to a 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes in when Mattias Vales scored. Cavalry bounced back quickly, however, when Daan Klomp converted a header off a setup from Bradley Kamden Fewo to tie the score. Moments later, Tobias Warschewski converted a penalty kick to give Cavalry a 2-1 lead. Just before the half, Marcos Bustos converted a penalty kick of his own to tie the score, but almost immediately, Cavalry retook the lead when Camden Fewo found the back of the net after a scramble to convert a corner kick. Five minutes into the second half, Ali Musse scored on a penalty kick to make it 4-2. Cavalry slowed the game down after that, and withstood a late push by the Tridents to emerge victorious. “We did what we had to: win,” said Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. after the game. “On a windy day -- and I think it was difficult conditions -- I think the early goal woke us up,” Wheeldon said. “We responded brilliantly, I think we could have kept going but the score’s the score – we won the game.” They close out the season Sunday against Vancouver FC, looking for a victory that would likely secure the top seed and qualify the club for the Concacaf Gold Cup. Forge FC will close out their schedule against Pacific FC next weekend but also play for the Telus Canadian Championship Wednesday against FC Montreal.
