Calgary Zoo makes decision to euthanize 35-year-old grizzly ‘Khutzy’

Officials with The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo have announced plans to euthanize a 35-year-old grizzly.

Khutzeymateen – known by staff as “Khutzy” – was born at the zoo.

A Friday social media post explains she’s geriatric, and her health has “significantly declined” recently.

“While supportive care has kept her comfortable, it may soon no longer be enough,” said the post.

After careful consideration, the zoo says the decision has been made to “walk her home” with a planned euthanasia on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

“This decision is an act of love, compassion, respect and responsibility for Khutzy,” said the zoo. “It is the final gift we can give her after a lifetime of care, ensuring she does not experience unnecessary suffering.”

Community members are encouraged to visit Khutzy over the weekend and on Monday to celebrate her three decades at the zoo.

“We hope her story will continue to inspire respect and care for all bears, both here at the zoo and in the wild for years to come,” the zoo said.
