Calgary police continue investigation into human remains found in Edworthy Park

For a second time in less than a week, human remains have been discovered in Calgary, but police don't believe the cases are connected.

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) says members of the missing persons unit have attended the scene where human remains were discovered on Monday evening.

Officers were called to Edworthy Park at 8:30 p.m. after people out for a walk made the grisly discovery near a small island in the Bow River.

The CPS homicide unit is working with the office of the medical examiner on the investigation.

“If they’ve been reported missing, a lot of times our missing persons team has already initiated an investigation and got information that will be relevant to what we find at the scene,” Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson said at a Tuesday news conference.

Gregson says at this time he doesn’t see “any connection” between the remains found in Edworthy Park on Monday and human remains found in Spruce Cliff last Thursday, though he says it’s something they will be looking into.

Gregson says it’s not unusual for remains to be discovered at this time of year.

“We’ve got the spring thaw, with that comes nicer weather, more people are out… so people are out and about and they’re seeing more things.”

He said when remains are found in the spring, investigators have to determine if the death was criminal, if the person died from self-inflicted wounds or if they simply succumbed to the elements.
