Calgary Opera emerging artists sing story of Little Red Riding Hood

The Calgary Opera is bringing a classic children’s fairytale to life with a unique production of Little Red Riding Hood.

The one-hour-long, bite-sized opera by Seymour Barab brings a playful twist to a children’s classic, making it a perfect introduction to opera for young audiences -- and a good time for everyone.

The production is being directed by Edmonton’s Mieko Ouchi, who has had numerous plays produced over the years at Alberta Theatre Projects.

“I am thrilled to be making my debut with Calgary Opera this season with Little Red Riding Hood,” said Ouchi in a release. “What a wonderful challenge to take a well-known classic fairytale and a charming and funny score and libretto by Seymour Barab and be given the opportunity to put my own bit of a modern twist on it.”

The show opened last week but there are five more shows this weekend at the Mamdani Opera Centre on 7th Street S.W., including a sensory-friendly 11 a.m. show Saturday.
