A Calgary man faces multiple charges in connection with a Sunday carjacking in southeast Calgary. Around 5:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Walden Mews S.E., police say a man was dropping off his grandchild when the offender, wearing a ski mask, jumped into his vehicle. Police say the man and child were able to leave the vehicle safely. Police say the man’s wife, who was in the backseat at the time, jumped out as the alleged carjacker drove away, nearly hitting her husband in the process. Around 5:45 p.m., members of the Calgary Fire Department were dispatched to the intersection of Shawville Road and Shawville Boulevard S.E., where a vehicle had crashed into a power pole. “Suddenly, the driver of the stolen vehicle backed into a fire truck,” police said in a statement. “The quick-thinking CFD fire truck operator was able to pin the stolen vehicle against the same power pole.” Officers arrived moments later and were able to extricate the suspect and arrest him. It was later confirmed that it was the carjacked vehicle. A 23-year-old Calgary resident was charged with one count of forcible confinement, one count of assault with a weapon, one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle, one count of assault against a peace officer, one count of failure to comply with a release order, one count of disguise with intent, one count of obstructing a peace officer and two counts of mischief. The man is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 9. “This was an incredibly dangerous situation and we’re relieved the family wasn’t hurt,” said Staff Sgt. Chiran Cardona, in a media release. “We also appreciate the assistance of the Calgary Fire Department in resolving the incident.” Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234.
