Calgary firefighters battle blaze at Sherwood home

The Calgary Fire Department says seven people have been displaced after a home in the community of Sherwood went up in flames on Thursday.

Firefighters responded to the 100 block of Sherwood Crescent N.W. just after midnight.

Crews found thick flames and heavy smoke coming from the rear of the two-storey home.

At the time, the wind was gusting more than 40 km/h.

“Firefighters stretched high volume fire hoses between the homes and began knocking back the fire,” the fire department said in a news release. “Crews also set up high-flow ground monitors to contain the fire and limit spread to other homes.”

Officials say 17 people safely got out from the house where the fire originated and the homes on either side.

No injuries were reported.

Though both neighbouring homes had damage to their exteriors, the occupants were able to head back inside once the fire was extinguished.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
