You’ll get a Superman at this year’s Calgary Comics and Entertainment Expo, but not his famed foil. Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor on Smallville, has had to pull out of his planned Expo appearance. He was to appear alongside Tom Welling, who played Clark Kent on the show. Smallville aired throughout the Aughts and a little beyond. Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane on the show, is also slated for Expo. On social media, Expo said, “Michael Rosenbaum was excited to see everyone … but can no longer make it to the show next month.” Expo shared a video message from Rosenbaum. In the video, Rosenbaum explained the sudden cancellation. “I have to have surgery. I’m going to be fine, but I won’t be able to come to Calgary,” he said. “I’m truly bummed because I love Calgary. “I love you all, and I apologize.” Rosenbaum and Welling were set to do a Smallville Nights Experience. “If you have an experience with (Rosenbaum) that might be impacted, Epic will be reaching out soon,” Expo said. While Expo is down a Lex Luthor, it found a “Lost Boy.” Jamison Newlander, who played Alan Frog in The Lost Boys, has been added to this year’s celebrity guest list. He joins Corey Feldman, who played Edgar Frog in the 1987 cult-classic. Also recently announced is John Rhys-Davies, joining fellow Lord of the Rings stars Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan. Celebrity-wrangling is sometimes a thing, one Expo organizer says. Andrew Moyes, FanExpoHQ vice-president, told CTV News in a previous interview it’s a lot of moving parts to get and keep celebrity guest lists in sync. Or, a lot of stars to align. “Lots of very rapid phone calls, lots of favours,” Moyes said. “It’s where our sense of responsibility to our fans comes in. “We really want to ensure that we’re finding the best possible scenario to go back with another option for our community.” Expo runs April 23-26 at the BMO Centre. More information about the show—and tickets—can be found on Expo’s website.
