A black bear seen in the southwest community of Oakridge over the past week has been captured. Calgary police warned people in the community about the bear on Sunday after it was spotted in a green space by the Glenmore Reservoir. The bear was also caught on camera strolling along Oakwood Place S.W. on Wednesday. On Thursday morning it turned up on Oakwood Place S.W. once again. Calgary police closed off the 400 block of the road and stood guard while the bear sat in the top of a tree. In a statement, Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services (FWES) said given the bear’s frequent appearance in the area, it was determined that relocating the bear was the safest option for the public and the bear’s well-being. Fish and Wildlife officers tranquilized the animal, which tumbled from the tree and onto safety netting the officers were holding to soften the fall. After being tranquillized twice, the bear continued to walk around. It finally collapsed following a third dose of the sedative. Officers then worked together to load the bear into a trap so it could be relocated. FWES says the bear was a female that weighed about 130 pounds (59 kg). It’s believed she’s about a year old, and officials say she wasn’t aggressive.
