A new chapter of Calgary’s popular Beakerhead festival kicks off at the Telus Spark Science Centre this weekend. The festival, first launched in 2013, was “paused” last year so officials could consider “how to bring Beakerhead once again to a growing and changing city.” Now, it’s been reimaged as Petri Dish, a three-day event featuring science, art, engineering, music and innovation. “From fiery science experiments and psychedelic funk to live dome shows, sensory mysteries, creative coding and hands-on discoveries, Petri Dish invites Calgarians to step into the unexpected and become part of the experiment,” said Telus Spark in a Tuesday news release. Friday, Nov. 6 - Beakernight The festival launches on Friday with an adults-only evening running from 6 p.m. to midnight. Called Beakernight, the event will feature everything from robot battles and medieval duels to a video rave inside the Digital Immersion Gallery. A complete schedule of events is available online. Saturday, Nov. 7 – all ages and free admission The festival continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with free admission. There will be hands-on science, art, music, live performances, STEAM talks and interactive experiences. A complete schedule of events is available online. Sunday, Nov. 8 – family festival Petri Dish wraps up on Sunday with a family festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring creative workshops, live science and family-friendly experiences.
